CHAPTER XI

THE STORM

Stacie Benson lay on a long, narrow invalid couch near the window of the pretty room which had been specially fitted up for her. It was a very dainty room, with white walls on which were hung copies of Margaret Tarrant’s paintings. A tall white bed stood in the centre of the room, and on one side of it was a table, made by Captain Humphries, which had shelves for the invalid’s belongings. A smaller one was between her and the window, and on it stood a big blue bowl, full of late roses. Down one side of the wall was a set of low book-shelves, laden with all Stacie’s precious books, and at the other was a pretty dressing-table. Rugs of pale blue lay about the polished floor, and Stacie herself wore a loose frock of blue. Her fair hair was bobbed like Jo’s, with a deep fringe which suited her, and she lay on rose-pink cushions. The last time Jo had seen her, she had been almost sitting; but to-day she was nearly flat, and there was no colour in her cheeks.

Joey stood in the doorway, and hailed her cheerfully. ‘Hullo, Stacie! I hear you want to see me. I want to see you all right. My dear, I’ve brought you this pile of contributions for the mag., and we ‘ll have to go over them together some time this week-end.’

Stacie turned her head. ‘Oh, Joey, I’m so glad to see you! How long have you been here? Come and sit down, won’t you?’

Jo shut the door behind her, and flopped the great pile of manuscripts on to the seat of a wicker chair which she carried over to the side of the couch, setting it carefully down, so that when she was sitting, she faced the invalid. Then she bent down and kissed the pale girl lying there before she picked up her papers, and dumped them down on the table.

‘There you are, my love! Those ought to keep you busy for a while! But I say? You’re flat again! Madge said you weren’t well, but I didn’t know you were down. Is your back bothering you?’

‘Just a little. It ached rather badly all day yesterday, and I didn’t get much sleep last night, so Dr Jem said I’d better have a day almost flat and not come down at all. I was rather bored, because I’d been looking forward to seeing you all; but it can’t be helped. I’ll sleep to-night, and then I’ll be all right to-morrow. It doesn’t happen often now, Joey. But they think it’s this hot weather. I do loathe it! It makes me feel so sticky and tired. But I really am getting on now.’

‘It is hot,’ said Jo, who had settled herself comfortably. ‘Did you ever know anything so weird as this heat we’re having? Here we are into November and the thermometer is soaring like a lark! It might be August!’

‘I wish it would get a little colder,’ sighed Stacie.
